Ferdinand Porsche was a brilliant engineer who, prior to World War II, had been involved in a variety of significant automotive engineering developments including the first hybrid drive  vehicles. Porsche’s 356 evolved over its 17-year life through four distinct series: pre-A, A, B, and C, with coupes, cabriolets, Speedsters, Hardtops, and Roadsters among the many body variations. Equipped with the “Carrera” 4-cam engine, the 356 was a force in sports car racing. Dedicated competition models were developed beginning in 1953, and the Rennsport Spyders dominated road racing, endurance, and hill climb events for over a decade.

This was the slogan that Porsche chose to advertise its new elite model, which, under the name Carrera RS, was supposed to change the course of history. The first 911 Carrera RS was a true stroke of genius on the part of Porsche: The car, only 500 units of which actually needed to be built for homologation purposes and which originally left the sales department far from convinced, turned into an unexpected sales hit. Within a very short time, the Carrera RS cemented its status as the dream car par excellence for sports car fans. Although the original, somewhat naive idea had been to only produce five hundred of these cars, in the end more than three times that number were made and sold. In the summer of 1973, production ended after 1,580 units had been made.

The new Carrera RS of the 964 generation became a worthy successor to the legend. Nevertheless, it took a full 18 years before the legitimate successor to the Carrera RS 2.7 was presented. Legendary Porsche racing engineer Roland Kussmaul tells us why it took so long in an exclusive interview.

The new Carrera RS of the 964 generation became the legitimate successor to the legend. The 964 RS needed no more than 260 hp to reach a top speed of 260 km/h. Again, more than twice as many vehicles as actually required were sold within a very short time.

The Porsche 993 RS became the last classic Carrera RS. The last classic 911 RS was presented in January 1995 . As far as many fans of the ‘Eleven were concerned, its attractive design crowned the 911 RS of the 993 generation as the most beautiful Carrera RS of all time. In this last air-cooled 911 RS, the engineers achieved a particularly harmonious synthesis of sportiness and comfort.

The book Porsche 956 001 – Creating a Legend, soon to be published by Sportfahrer Verlag, is a lavish English-language monograph on this car that describes its history in detail. From the initial considerations for the Group C rules through the testing phase, its limited race outings, the later use as a technology test car and the owner history, no significant aspect of the car’s existence has been forgotten.

A number of important people were interviewed, including Peter Falk, Norbert Singer, Valentin Schäffer and Jürgen Barth. There are also valuable insights from Derek Bell, one of the most important factory drivers of the 956 era.

Adding to the book is the reproduction of numerous records from testing and other original documents that help convey the complexity of the car’s development.

The IROC Porsches chronicles the original International Race of Champions 1973–74 season, in which the world’s top drivers battled in identical Porsche RSRs to claim the title of world’s greatest racing driver.

The Porsche 911 is among the most historic, sought after, and read about cars in history. Early cars are now highly valued collectibles, and modern 911s remain front-line international GT racing cars. There is considerable worldwide interest in Porsche racing activities, from factory entered and sponsored teams to the club-level racing scene.

It is against this rich racing background that The IROC Porsches relates one of the most interesting and storied episodes in 911 racing history. The premier season of the International Race of Champions series was founded around purpose-built, virtually identical 1974 3.0-liter Porsche 911 RSR racing cars to be driven by racing greats from IndyCar, Formula 1, NASCAR, and other international racing series. The premise was simple and brilliant: put the world’s best racing drivers in identical cars and the series winner could claim “best in the world.” Former racing driver, mega businessman, and racing team owner Roger Penske was the original force behind the series, and he worked directly with the Porsche factory to get these special IROC Porsches designed and built.

The depth of talent and breadth of racing disciplines embodied in the series was stunning: Emerson Fittipaldi (Formula 1), AJ Foyt (Indy), Richard Petty (NASCAR), Al Unser (Indy), George Follmer (Can-Am), and more. The drivers’ incentive to compete was manifold, first being to demonstrate the talents and abilities of their own particular brands of racing. Not to be understated was the draw of significant payout to winners. Consummate Porsche racer Mark Donohue won the first year’s championship.

The IROC series would carry on several decades, but never again would it feature Porsche and never again would it field such a diverse selection of race drivers. That first season was truly lightning in a bottle.
